The list of potential Bonds is long and varied – it would seem that imagination is the only limiting factor when coming up with successors for Daniel Craig. We were convinced he’ll be a brilliant Bond when we saw him in Layer Cake back in 2004… and were not disappointed when Casino Royale came out, so the successor has some fairly big shoes to fill.
So, who’s got what it takes to be Bond? Daniel Craig was a departure from the traditional brunette Bond, so the requirements would mostly be a) ability to pull of incredible stunts while b) maintaining the stiff upper lip while at it.
Unlikely but popular
Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Idris Elba, Damien Lewis, Henry Cavill and Michael Fassbender would probably all fall into this category. We’d say they’re all too high-profile to bring a clean slate to Bond movies after Daniel Craig. The same would probably apply to Tom Hardy – plus all of the gents above are fairly busy being one superhero or another.
Here’s Idris Elba in Bastille Day with Richard Madden (of Game of Thrones fame) – whose name, indicentally, has also been thrown about for the role of Bond.
New kids on the block
Jamie Dornan, Jamie Bell, Luke Evans, Charlie Hunnam, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Dan Stevens and Kit Harrington have also become popular options on lists where various bookmakers offer bets for who’s going to be the next Bond – though maybe these gents would be a bit more Q (last portrayed by Ben Whishaw) than 007.
In the slightly more advanced years-category, Jack Huston, James Norton and Aidan Turner have gained popularity amongst fans of the franchise and gamblers alike while they're still fresh-faced enough not to have been typecast to any particular category.
How would you feel about having David Beckham as 007? Or Jason Statham perhaps? Alan Carr, anyone? It’s not impossible… only very, very improbable.
And as Sam Mendes, the director of the last two Bond movies, Skyfall and Spectre said, “It’s not a democracy.” So who gets to have a say? “Barbara Broccoli chooses who’s going to be the next Bond: end of story.” Well, as Ms Broccoli got it right with Daniel Craig and as she’s a second-generation Bond producer, we’re pretty sure the next Bond will be as unexpected yet strangely fitting as the last.
