Well, Aquaman is no longer a child-like, golden-haired, latex-suit-wearing weirdo that rides seahorses. Definitely an improvement there. But what about the remaining 10 characters and the 110 minutes of the film? Let’s take a closer look….
Disclaimer: I am not a DC hater. On the contrary, I am quite possibly the biggest fan of the comics and have sat through every single episode of Arrow. Yes, at this point you may gasp in awe of my determination. There’s nothing I’d like more than a great DC hit taking every viewer’s breath away…
Let’s start off with the unbiased, numerical analysis of this here masterpiece (or flop):
|Length:||110 minutes||Box office to date:||$213.9 million|
|Production cost:||$300 million||Worldwide box office:||$616.5 million|
|1st-weekend box office:||$93.8 million||Release date:||17 November 2017|
Hmm. Not great, if I am honest… But alright, good things take time. So let’s take a closer look at other factors.
Past experience has shown that a great cast doesn’t always make a great movie. (Not pointing any fingers at Suicide Squad here…) But Justice League boasts an extraordinary amount of world-class actors, representing an equally extraordinary amount of epic superheroes and heroines:
|Ben Affleck – Bruce Wayne/Batman||Jason Momoa – Arthur Curry/Aquaman|
|Henry Cavill – Clark Kent/Superman||Ray Fisher – Victor Stone/Cyborg|
|Amy Adams – Lois Lane||Jeremy Irons – Alfred Pennyworth|
|Gal Gadot – Diana Prince/Wonder Woman||Diane Lane – Martha Kent|
|Ezra Miller – Barry Allen/The Flash||Connie Nielsen – Queen Hippolyta|

I guess not everyone’s seen the movie yet?? Based on the box office figured, I’d say hardly anyone has seen the movie 😉 So I’ll keep this plot summary spoiler-free and short. Set shortly after the death of Superman, Bruce Wayne (Batman) decides to fight the evil in the world – no, not poverty, corruption, and co., but an actual evil monstrosity awoken from a deep historical sleep. Together with Wonder Woman, Batman faces this enemy and soon discovers he needs a team of metahumans to help him defeat this monster. The Justice League – Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash – team up and hope to save the planet before its too late. So – cliff-hanger one – will they make it, and cliff-hanger two – is Superman really dead? You’re going to have to watch the movie to find out!
This movie has all the makings of greatness – marvellous actors, a generous budget, a great story concept, but I must be honest, the execution is not great. Does it beat other current releases like Bad Moms’ Christmas or Daddy’s Home 2? Yeah, hands down. But does it rival Marvel’s Thor Ragnarok or Spider-Man: Homecoming? Not even close. My score: 2 ½ out of 5 stars.
