The Phantom of the Opera is a novel written by French writer Gaston Leroux. No need to say that the title was a little bit more French. The original piece was called Le Fantôme de L’Opéra and I was published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from 1909 to 1910. It is partly inspired by historical events at the Paris Opera during the 19th century and a tale concerning the use of a former ballet pupil’s skeleton in a production of Der Freischütz.
Afterwards it has been successfully adapted into various stage and film adaptions, though the most known are the movie featuring Lon Chaney from 1925, and of course the 1986 musical from Andrew Lloyd Webber. The latter is still ongoing in both the West End in London, as on Broadway in New York. On the 11th of February 201, the Phantom of the Opera played its 10.000th show on Broadway! Surely there is no greater recognition of success.
So what is the story about? It is about the Phantom who, from his hideout beneath the 19th century Paris opera house, schemes to get closer to vocalist Christine Daae. The Phantom, wearing a mask to hide a congenital disfigurement, uses all his tricks to keep Christine from falling for the arts benefactor Raoul. It is no surprise, the Phantom enacts a plan to keep Christine by his side, while Raoul tries to foil the scheme.
