One of the most anticipated PC video games to be created – perhaps in history – is entirely crowdfunded. In 2012, the developers of Star Citizen, a sci-fi-explorer video game, started using a crowdfunding plugin on their website with the goal of $2 million, adding a supplementary Kickstarter account to the funding with a goal of $500,000. After the funding started surpassing these initial goals at an incredible rate, they began to add expansions to the actual game to fulfill “stretch goals” – including functionality such as VR capability and adding more improved content to the Star Citizen universe environment. These are not guys who are going to turn down your money.
In 2013, the developers, Cloud Imperium Games, had raised $15 million in a year, so far the biggest crowdfunded project in the world, thereafter reaching almost $40 million in 2014, becoming officially listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the “largest single amount ever raised via crowdsourcing.” Fast forward to 2016 and Star Citizen is sitting on over $120 million.
Hallelujah – FIFA has finally made a smart decision! Albeit one that transpires in a virtual online gaming environment, it still represents a changing narrative around women’s sports.
FIFA will feature women’s teams for the first time in history! Gameplay now includes the option to compete with various women’s teams, including the US, Canada, Germany and England. Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair will be the first two women to ever appear on a EA SPORTS FIFA cover. Morgan plays for the United States Women’s National Team and Sinclair is Captain of the Canadian Women’s National Team.
